Up part 2!

Remember when Miles said " Up" here?

Well, Maxwell apparently said it this weekend to Peter... twice. I was not in the room either time. A little sad to miss this milestone. Maxwell has been saying Dadadadada for a while now, but does it count for his first word? I think Up is his official first word, but I wasn't there to witness it so is it official if mom doesn't hear?

In other first news, Maxwell started clapping today. He did it at lunch and we think it was his signal to give him more food, although anything he does is his signal to put more food in his mouth, more commonly something like a squawk. He also was raising his hands above his head at dinner tonight. Another signal?

Yesterday we were in the car driving and Miles said, "It hurts my feelings when Maxwell stands in his crib." Well, thank you Miles for using your words to describe why you keep asking that Maxwell not sleep in your room, but your room is now Maxwell's room so get use to it. As of last Monday, Maxwell and Miles are sleeping in the same room. Through the night. Waking at 6:30am. Again through the night! There is a bit of getting Maxwell to fall asleep in his new crib (he's been shacking it up in mom and dad's room pack n play style for the past 8 1/2 months). He likes to stand. He does not know how to sit from a standing position. The first day he let go and fell back hitting his head on the opposite side of the crib. Tonight we explained again to Miles that Maxwell would eventually learn to not stand in his crib or at least sit down and go to sleep without Maxwell crying for us to come lay him down. The important part is we got our room back and uninterrupted sleep cycle back. Thank you Jesus.

That's all for baby news. Good night Internet and my boys until the morning!

Currently

Doing: Just finished Jillian's ab workout. I recently made the switch to minimalist shoes, think Born to Run style aka barefoot running and my calves, ankles and feet have taken a beating as I made the switch. Apparently there is a learning curve for this running style and your muscles need to get adjusted. Hence the workout DVD.

Loving: Frozen cookie dough. I happened upon a great cookie dough recipe that makes perfectly soft cookies and I learned from my wise sister to freeze the cookie dough in balls and use as needed. Well summer means no oven use because I hate to have appliances fight one another (A/C takes on the oven and the heat from the oven wins) so I just don't bake much.  Enter frozen cookie dough, a perfect little dessert.

Reading: I read And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini who also wrote Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping. Heartbreaking. Convicting. Redeeming. Numerous stories and voices are weaved together into a wonderful book. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. And throughout the book, Hosseini quietly asks the reader, "Who are you? Which character do you identify with?" Read it. Also reading The Sun Also RIses by Ernest Hemmingway. RIght now I'm thinking, Ernest get over yourself, but I will wait to make final judgement to the end.

Watching: Nothing. Summer has become an unintentional no tv zone. We have been busy looking at houses online in the evenings and with no new episodes of Modern Family and the end of the Office. I suspect that will change with football season starting up, Broncos and Peyton all the way!

Stressing about: Wishing we had a house, but enjoy our time in this house, in our neighborhood, with our neighbors. I'm really going to miss my neighbors and our weekly dinners on Thursday nights.

Thinking about: Buying a Scamp trailer. Husband not so much. Don't mind me if I take a quick road trip to CA or MN to pick up a trailer.

Looking forward to: Savoring these last few days of summer. Why is it when everyone else is going back to school, I feel like my summer is over too? Miles is not signed up for preschool at this point. Maybe next year when he is 4 or maybe not. We will see. I will try to get a few more trips to the pool before they close for the season.

Making me happy: My 2 boys sleeping in the same room... soundly... no crying... until 6:40am. You guys that's almost 11 hours straight with 2 boys ages 3 yrs and 8 mos sleeping in the same room! We got our bedroom back. I'm so happy!

Quick pics before baby's arrival

 Beautiful day in Golden

35.5 weeks

2y 6m 3w

Thoughts before I become a mother of two boys:
  • I'm going to miss spending all day with just Miles, he is such a cool kid.
  • I can't believe I'm doing this whole baby thing again.
  • Ready to meet my baby boy, I have missed holding a baby.
  • I'm praying for an easy labor and ideal postpartum (is there such a thing?).  Even if things don't go perfect, I know I can do all things through Him who give me strength.  Philippians 4:13
Ok this boy is coming in the next few days according to some signs.  Pictures and birth story to come soon!

Scene: Just say no

Each stage in life is different socially.  When I was in my twenties and single, I was available to do anything anytime and so I tried to go and do everything.  That was a fun time in life as I got to travel and try lots of new things, go to concerts and eat at nice restaurants.

Enter husband 4 years ago today.  Enter son 20 months ago.  Scene: just say no.

And action or rather no action.  Instead Calm.  Quiet.  Restful.  Intentional.  Meaningful.

This might be a little abrupt and antisocial, but really it's a desire to have a quiet and simple family life.  I don't want to spend every weekend rushing around to activities and meals out and birthday parties.  I like my weekends at home, reading, playing with Miles, walking to the park.

But I think it is a fine line because I want to see my friends and family.  When do I say yes to an event or activity for our family?  Often I feel guilt not going.  Is that when I should say no?  When the guilt is urging me to go?  Should I go to every single one of Miles' friends birthday parties?

I'm an introvert and my husband is becoming one as the years go on, so do we just cede to natural tendency?  I don't know.

I don't think kiddie birthday parties are intrinsically evil or bad, I just don't like attending them.  So help me out friends, what do you think?  What makes it onto your calendar?

Peaceful Hike

Miles and I went hiking today at Green Mountain.  Miles was surprisingly agile on the rocky trail and considering his decision to run.  We hiked up and ate a snack at the top and came back down.

It appears Miles is not afraid of heights, but he gave me a heart attach a few times while he ran on the drop-off side of the trail.

He also enjoyed picking up "balls" or rocks and throwing them down the steep hill.  Boys will be boys.
My heart was happy to be outside in the quiet of the day.  It is amazing how you don't realize how noisy and busy the city until you get back to nature.

Loving the read Last Child in the Woods.  Makes me nostalgic for Evergreen and our tree houses and knowing every inch of our 2 acre property.

Laws and Principles

I just finished The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy Keller.  I highly recommend this book for both married and singles.  Keller talks about how many enter marriage today with hopes of staying independent while still reaping the benefits of marriage domestically, financially, socially, and sexually.  After a few months or rather weeks, couples find that the other person is just as selfish as they are.

Keller basis the book on Ephesians 5, you know the line, "wives submit to your husbands."  He talks what this really looks like if the husband is loving and making choices to serve the wife.  And the picture of marriage isn't what you get out of it, but what you give and serve.

This means I do the dish even if it is my husband's turn.  I make daily choices to serve my husband and think what would make him happy.  I say I'm sorry more often than I have been.

Keller also quotes Jane Eyre and this struck a cord with me concerning discipline.

I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man.  I will hold to the principles received by me when I was sane, and not mad-- as I am now.  Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be.  If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth?  They have a worth--so I have believed; and if I cannot believe it now, it is because I am insane--quite insane: with my veins running fire, and my heart beating faster than I can count its throbs.  Preconceived opinions, foregone determinations, are all I at this hour to stand by: there I plant my foot."
I did.
I love this.  Mr. Rochester has just asked Jane to move in and be his mistress.  Jane is conflicted, she would love to say yes.  No one would blame her if she did after such a life of hardship.  And he loves her and all you need is love, right?  But she says to herself, "when life was easy and I wasn't faced with a difficult decision, I knew what was right and wrong.  Even though my heart wants to say yes and it would feel good, I know that it is wrong.  I will not trust what feels right, but go with what I know is right.  I stand my ground."

This is why I want to be disciplined because when it becomes routine and rhythm, it will just be part of who I am.  Whether that is God's Word or prayer or running.

I have heard and used the excuse that doing something everyday is too legalistic.  Where is the freedom?

The freedom is in God's grace.

2012 the year of discipline

How's 2012 going so far?  We are a day done and 365 more to go this year.

Did you start off on the right foot with your resolutions?  I went to church and went for a run, check and check.

I went to Grace Church today with my family.  It is a larger church in the suburbs of Denver.  There is nothing wrong with suburbia, but after going to various churches in Denver city, I could sense the difference.

And it felt like Home.  Yep you heard me right, I liked the organized childcare system, the cushy chairs, the enthusiastic greeters that ALL wanted to shake my hand and wish me a Happy New Year and good morning, the "contemporary" worship band and the "bow your head and raise your hand" prayer.  I admit that these amenities could have tipped the scale either way for me, but the clincher was the pastor preaching from the Bible.  A novel idea for pastors these days.  An added bonus was that the age variation is huge as in everyone there isn't between the age of 25 and 35.

I love new starts and goals and lists, the follow through is the kicker for me.  What's the statistic that most New Years resolutions are broken by the time February rolls around?  I guess most people these days struggle with the follow through, but that's the problem.  My generation (and I include myself in this observation) don't know how to commit.  Yes some of us have said the "I do" and go to our daily jobs, but other than the things you have "to do,"  what things do you do on a daily basis?

Eat and sleep you gotta do so don't count.

Ok what about something you are committed to every week?  Week in and week out, no matter what?  Even when you don't feel like it?  "The things that are important to you, you will find time.  The things that aren't, you'll find an excuse."

I give lip service to Jesus and the poor and family and friends and hobbies, but I also have a lot of excuses.

Right now we have so many options and choices that I get frozen in indecision and do nothing at all.

For the past month, I have been thinking a lot about discipline.  The getting up every morning at 6, not because I have to, but because I want to run and read the Bible and pray.  I want to be disciplined.

Discipline does not feel good which is what our society is stuck on.  I'll go to church when I feel like I need some Jesus.  I'll run when the weather is absolutely perfect with no headwind and not too hot to cause me to sweat either.  Never going to happen.  We wonder why we feel disconnected to our community or friends or Jesus, but we aren't willing to put the hard work into knowing and serving our community or friends or Jesus.

All this to say I'm guilty, but sick of being lazy and complacent and waiting for just the right feeling.  I am going to be disciplined.  I'm going to read about self-discipline (The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer).  But I know that is not enough.

I need a plan.

I will go to bed by 10 each night and may need to go to bed even earlier.
I will set my alarm to go off 10 minutes earlier than I am now each week until I get to 6AM.
With the extra time in the morning, I will read the bible.  Adding running when I have more time.
I will go to church each week that I am in town.  It is just in my schedule.  No option of sleeping in or having a lazy sunday at home.  We will be committed to church.
I will run at least 4 days a week.  If it doesn't happen in the morning by myself, than it will happen in the afternoon with Miles.
I will have 1 new activity or craft for Miles each week.
I also would like to hike with Miles each week.

Weekend at the Beaver

Hello Beavers

We spent the weekend in Beaver Creek, CO with my husband's company.  Read: all expense paid weekend in the mountains.  Only problem, no sitter for our little one.  Oh well, I can only do so much shmoozing with the wifes and his coworkers.  This was Miles' first ride on a ski lift, but fairly positive it won't be his last if my husband has his way.

Wavy lines and dream music plays in my head as I picture a quiet Saturday at home while the boys go skiing.  Yes, I can support Miles on skis.

Dad gets his coffee

After our ride to the top there was breakfast and a giant sandbox.  Miles was in heaven.

Horseshoes anyone?

Don't you love trying to get pictures of your little one these days?  It's like tracking a dog.  "This bucket is nice.  Oh wait, there's a better bucket.  What?  You had a perfect shot if I would just be still?"  Good luck on ever getting the perfect shot.  And family pictures are truly a prize to get him 1. calm. 2. smiling. 3. today.  So our family portrait was classic.

Squirmy boy

In running news, I ran 8.6 miles when I got back from the mountains at a respectable pace especially for not running all weekend long.  Today I did some strides again, but this time on the awful treadmill.  Note to self, get workout done in the morning so you are not forced to run on a hamster wheel in the basement in the evening which feels like it takes 100x more effort to run on than out in nature.  This is truly how I feel on the treadmill.

I'm starting "Maximize your Mornings Challenge" tomorrow.  For those of us who are mothers, the fundamental idea is to stop waking up TO our children and start waking up FOR them.  The idea is for me to wake up before Miles starts chatting in his crib.  To have quality time with myself reading the Bible, getting my run in and doing a few chores before Miles is awake.  Doing a task with Miles as my "helper" takes about 10x as long as if I can just do it real quick on my own.  But, I whole heartly admit that I am not a morning person.  I have always hit the snooze button as far back as high school, in college and all through my career.  But I see the value of waking up early and I want to work towards being a morning person.  Wish me luck!

Still running

I'm still running.  And training.  On Saturday I did a 7 miles run.  It was the perfect running weather at about 60 degrees.  I started out slow and was able to run at a good pace the entire time.

Today I did 5 miles of shorter strides and sprints and that went surprisingly well.  I was disappointed because there not any tracks within running distance so I had to just look at my GPS watch to see my distance, but I was actually motivated to get this run in.

Tomorrow I have an easy 4 mile run.  I'm feeling good about this training stuff.  Ask me about it in 6 weeks.

Downtown fun

Sunday we had a picnic dinner at Commons Park in downtown.  Miles loved watching all the kids and dogs walk by. And he loves to run free.

Water is the best!  I love long weekends.

P.S.  We had Yogurt Time on Platte and it was not good.  Melty, runny yogurt and the sugar free flavors were disgusting.  Just FYI, in case you were planning on going there.

Hello Hippo

I finally finished the happy hippo a few weeks ago.  It took me a very long time.  I was getting sick of seeing the unfinished pieces laying around.  I was getting sick of that yarn.  The smile did not come out quite right and I can still take it out and redo it.  But Miles does not seem to mind.  He loves hippo.  It is apparent by the chocolate stains on hippos snout.  Miles likes to hug and bite hippo.

The book of animals are very cute in Knitted Wild Animals by Sarah Keen.  If I was motivated I would make another one.  I am not motivated.

One week done

Week 1
5 Runs
Total milage 17 miles

Slow and steady.  It really is hard to get runs in with this hot weather.  I feel better when I run in the morning so I'm not dreading the late day run in the heat.  At the same time, I'm trying to figure out how to have enough in the tank to have a strong run in the morning.  So far I have eaten a 1/2 banana and 8oz of Naked Juice green machine flavor and that does not seem to cut it.  Maybe a whole banana with peanut butter.  The last few days I haven't rolled out of bed until 7am and that is not going to cut it once Peter has to go into the office more regularly.

Goal for tomorrow:  Get up by 6:15 and out the door by 6:30.  Drink Naked juice and eat banana with peanut butter.  Do a few hills at stride pace to get my legs moving.

Day 2

Distance 3.08 miles
Time 27:33 mins

Getting up is 90% of the run.  Whether it is off the couch, out of bed or away from work.

This morning I was so close to staying in bed.  As I laid there half awake, I accessed how I was feeling.  Pretty much everything was sore.  You see yesterday I decided to do squats, lunges, crunches, and stairs to really kick my butt into shape.  So I'm feeling it today.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Today the weakness is sprinting from my body as I recover.  I'll take today off from strength training.

Bowtie & Blizzard

Running journey

Distance 3.22 miles
Time 28:36 mins

I did it!  I got myself out of bed before Miles woke up.  Not only did I get up...  I went running.  This is the first day, the first of many.  I have decided to sign up for a half marathon this fall.  I need a goal so that I can be diligent and dedicated to my running routine.  Otherwise running just does not happen because of all the other things in life happen.  Sleeping.  House duties.  Kid duties.  It's too hot out.  I'm too tired.  Spending time with husband.  I'll run later.  or tomorrow.  I don't feel well.  Etc.  You know the excuses because you use them too for whatever else you ideally want to do.

So even though I got back yesterday from vacation and I did not sleep well last night.  I got up.  And I ran.  And I remembered how good I feel when I run.  When I don't run, there is a string inside of my that gets wrapped around my sanity.  The more days I got without running, the tighter the strings gets until I am "high strung" and "tightly wond."

Running is my therapy.  Free therapy.  So I am one of those people who are fantic about getting their run because I know what happens when I don't.  I'm stressed.  I stress out my husband.  I can't sleep.  I worry about nothing.  I have trouble couping with everyday occurances.  I'm selfish.  When I run, I'm laid back (really I am).  I let things slide off my back.  I can sleep.  I can enjoy other people's company and I'm not annoyed that they were late or rude or unkind or not thinking about me.  Because when I run the string loosens and I can look outside of myself.

"Wow" you say "running does all that?  It's a miracle drug."

It really is for me.
