paper gifts for me

today is my 1 year anniversary and i feel proud and nostalgic and lucky and wiser. pride comes from the fact that i'm with the most amazing and patient man and that we made it 1 year in marriage. i look back on our wedding as such a special day, a day that goes down in my history book. thoughts of the past year bring me joy and embarrassment because there are definitely happy moments to remember. the big trips to tahiti for our honeymoon and the trip to china and korea. the simple moments of having dinner with friends or dinner he made for me. but i'm not so proud of the ugly time together fighting or pouting and the realization that marriage is a lot harder than advertised.

there should be a release form every couple must sign and read the fine print. marriage is the hardest thing you will ever do. you will be required to give of yourself daily and then when night falls, you must give some more. sorry's need to be abundant as you will be an ass most of the time. being right doesn't mean you are the winner. be forewarned that you will reveal the ugliest side of yourself and be constantly reminded how selfish and petty you are. it is wise to learn grace and forgiveness and grace. the most important quality you can pick in a mate is humility and the ability to easily forgive you because you will mess up A LOT.

marriage has been on my mind a lot lately partly because i'm not very good at it. i'd rather do things my way all the time. 30 years of relying on myself does not breed dependence, it breeds bad habits communicating and selfishness.

i'm lucky because i have an extremely patient husband. we're lucky because we won't give up on marriage or each other. life is better because i have him and because i'm being refined and reshaped, not by my husband but because i have a husband. and when/if we are blessed with children, get out the sandpaper or sledgehammer because more of self will be chiseled away. i guess this is what taking up my cross daily looks. no one should give the illusion it's easy, that it's a fairytale of happily ever after because that's sh!t. And maybe that's why the first anniversary gift is paper... toilet paper to whip away the loads of crap that we expected marriage to be like. paper to remind you that marriage isn't roses and gold necklaces.

divorce seems to be rampant today as more couples i know fall victim to it. and it scares me. so give me toilet paper for this anniversary as a sober reminder that there will be sh!t ahead, toilet paper needed!

a penny for my thoughts

-six inches of snow last night, 75 minutes commute to work this morning, same as any other day which includes:
10 minutes walk to lightrail stop
40 minutes lightrail ride
15 minute bus ride
10 minutes walk to my cubicle

-denver weather, snowstorm and a crappy morning commute. afternoon sunshine and blue skies.

-annoyance: stupid people driving stupid while talking on their cell phones.

-interesting fact: my husband use to think scooters were for chicks, now he rides "my" scooter more than I do.

-facebook is a new addiction, as well as a tool to reconnect with old friends. I'm also tempted to compare myself to where everyone else is in life.

-december should just be paid vacation because how much work really gets done at the end of the year? plus the fact that I can't concentrate on anything work related.

-i could really get use to having my husband home full time. i love coming home and deciding together what to have for dinner. even fighting over what we watch is more fun than sitting alone on the couch.

Happy Hour in Denver

Haven't you always wanted that restaurant where people knew you when you walked in the door, like Cheers? An affordable place that was local to your house so you could visit anytime and all the time. I found my place, it's called Kiva or rather I should say, it was called Kiva. The restaurant closed it's doors in August, never to serve it's $2 margaritas again.

I'm moving on. Forget the free taco bar and dinner and drinks for $6 a person including a tip to the nice taco lady. There are other great deals to be had in Denver.

McCormick's is already a favorite for it's $1.95 food menu and $2.75 PBR. We usually get the the 1/2 pound cheeseburger and leave stuffed.

Lola in the Highlands has $3 tacos (I think it use to be $2), $4 gauc and $2 Modelo can. Nice location to look at Denver's skyline.

Brasserie Ten Ten in Boulder looks to have an amazing happy hour menu 3-6:30 PM with food and drinks under $5.

Lime XS advertises a happy hour tacos, I'm going to try it out tonight.

Nothing will fill the space left from Kiva, but I can sure try!
(Let me know of any other great denver happy hours!)

my new fav wine

i love wine that cost under $10 and here is my new favorite. veramonte cabernet sauvignon 2006. try it out for some blackberry, cherry and oak. we had it sunday with chili and is from south america, chile. wine news gave it a 92 which is quite the buy. i picked up my bottle from argonaut liquors for $9.50.

busy week

the week started off with a bang or rather a steady throb in my head. of late, i've been getting migraines more frequently, about once a week. not quite sure what's causing them, but they can stop anytime now.

be coincidence, my doctor called for a sleep study appointment the same day. the history there is that i don't sleep well and i am tired all day long most everyday. so the last time i was in to see the doctor or PA, she ordered a sleep test for me. that was about 3 months ago. i setup the test for tuesday night. i was hooked up to computers that monitored my blood pressure, my breathing, oxygen intake, brain waves etc. needless to say, i didn't sleep much that night. wait and see what comes about.

Saturday we got the pleasure of hanging out with my cool niece and nephews. the kiddos were easy to be with and we had a blast at the Denver Art Museum. the first saturday of each month, admission is free for colorado residents and the cool new Hamilton building makes it worth the trip. something has to be said for introducing art into a child's life and what defines art which stretched the kids brain. and i have to give 2 thumbs up for the DAM's ability to be kid-friendly with so many activities to keep them busy, we had to make the kids leave. see the kids being part of art in the broom and dustpan.

then we headed to casa bonita, a once in a life time trip, seriously you only need to go once. peter describes it as disneyland in colorado because they shamelessly try to get money from the parents for cheap toys and the like. the kids love it because there is a skit where someone
always ends up in a "lagoon" below. it was disappointing that "bart's cave" was no more, as i remember the cave when i was in elementary school. the food is atrocious, you'd be better going to a hole in the wall down colfax for some authentic mexican food for a fraction of the price. overall, i think they liked it, but i hope they liked the museum better.

saturday i was disappointed because the honda shop didn't have the color scooter i had my heart set on and dealerships are closed on sunday. so sunday we went to brunch with my parents at vita and saw an awesome view of downtown denver. the weather has been gorgeous, perfect for scootering. sunday afternoon we put a basket on my retro bike and planned to lounge around. then peter started to search craigslist, which we absolutely love. he fould a red metropolitan scooter used. so after getting some fast cash, we headed to broomfield. saw the scooter and said, "we'll take it!"

next task was trying to get it back to denver. i'm not confident yet to ride, so peter was my knight on a scooter and rode it home. he loved it, said he felt like dumb and dumber and couldn't stop smiling. my turn tonight!

***don't forget to vote tomorrow and while you're at, some restaurants want to give you free stuff to boot. check out the list here!

fear not or your hair will turn gray

it has started to happen. to be truthful, it started 4 or 5 years ago. i remember sitting in my communication class in college, bored out of my mind. so i start looking at my hair and among the mass of black, i found a "clear" hair. i showed it to my male classmate, who so kindly pointed out that it was no big deal, just a grey hair. i was shocked and apalled at the thought of having a gray hair. i didn't think much of it until i started finding more and more clear pigmented hairs. so i did what any sane woman in her mid twenties would do, began plucking.

remember that old wives tale, if someone give you a fright, your hair will turn grey? i would like to believe that tale or at least a revised version, that every time i worry or am scared of the unknown that a single hair turns gray. then something so superficial as hair color would be in my control.

but isn't that my real problem? i want to be in control of my life, the going-ons and what not. and the fear comes when the reins are out of my hand and i have to trust God for his best. i'm good at worrying, right now it's how will have shelter for ourselves in the future. where will peter and i live? can we afford our dreams? and if we can afford our dream house, should we spend our money on that material possession? is it my right to own a house? these are all questions i ask myself. so how do i live delibrately with or without gray hair?
